Ready To Ride (Due: Feb. 26, 2003)

Boldly this broad, sturdy, and powerful board stands braced against the wall. Its sleek, gleaming surface shows off its ability to thrash effortlessly through its element, its territory. Run your fingers along its curved, yet sharp, edges and imagine how it carves and cuts, slides and glides as it creates its own path. You are its master, controlling this creation through the snow, just you and your snowboard.
Next to the board sits its companions, your boots. Shove your feet into these tight, snug, hard outside, soft inside footwear. Lace up and pull hard! Looseness equals less control. As you stand up the slant of the boots at the ankles leaves you bent at the knees with your lower legs leaning forward. Pick up that beautiful and excellently designed board that just about matches your height when standing on its edge. Trudge along to your destination, the powdery white stuff. Your natural instinct of walking is now a noticeable task with the bulky, slanted boots and heavy clothing. You feel awkward, but with that slightly heavy, elongated object in your right hand you’re reminded that you will soon be able to move easily out on the slopes. Once you reach the snow and your feet begin to sink into its soft surface with each step, you’re filled with excitement and are ready to go. Place your board down on the snow’s shimmering surface and step into the bindings. A perfect match. With your feet held firmly in place, the high-backs of the bindings pressed against the back of your boots, you feel connected to the board. As one, you’re ready to go. Now comes the part that delays the fulfillment of your desire to fly down the mountain, the chair lift. You have to wait in line, and then sit on a cold, hard bench while you slowly climb the steep mountainside and anticipate reaching its peak. The prolonged trip to the top leaves you with nothing to do but wait. Your eyes begin to move downward to your snowboard. Gazing at the image of an island volcano printed at one end, you feel like you’re going to explode if you don’t reach the summit soon. Finally you peer over the top of the mountain and you see the endless sky before you. Your board, labeled with the brand “Rossignol”, a strong name, and titled with the name “Wave”, again makes contact with the snow. You stand up and feel your solid, strong board beneath you and you feel like you’re barely touching the snow, just floating above it. The board’s deep blue color boldly stads out against the white snow. Immediately this feeling washes over you and you know what you’re meant to do. Ride that board!
